Biographical / Historical

The Cherokee Rose Storytelling Festival was an annual festival held in Carrollton from 1986 to 1998. The festival was for adults and children and aimed to help the community "rediscover the magic with your entire family" through the excitement of oral tradition according to the 10th Annual Cherokee Rose Storytelling Festival program. The festival was held at the Carrollton Community Activities Center, Carrollton High School, and the Townsend Performing Arts Center. The event had workshops, musical performances and storytelling sessions featuring national, regional, and local performers. Workshops topics included teaching ecological ideas with storytelling, uses of parables in sacred stories, using storytelling to teach foreign languages, telling tales, building audience participation, and holiday stories. The event hosted a wide range of performances including folktale and fantasy storytelling, poetry, ghost stories, stories through illustration, sacred storytelling, singing, and concerts.
