Biographical/Historical note

The National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) is the official coordinating board for the historically Black Greek-letter fraternities and sororities at the University of West Georgia (UWG). NPHC’s purpose is to foster cooperative actions of its members in dealing with matters of mutual concern. To this end, the NPHC promotes the well-being of its member organizations and provides leadership training for its constituents. The NPHC Executive Board is committed to upholding the core values of scholarship, leadership, friendship, and service.

The UWG National Pan-Hellenic Council is composed of eight International Greek letter fraternities and sororities: Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc., Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., and Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc. The NPHC organizations are sometimes collectively referred to as the “Divine Nine”.

Immediate Source of Acquisition note

Materials were collected as part of a program, Your Organization Lives On at UWG, founded in 2017 by University Archivist, Shanee' Y. Murrain. This program educates, performs outreach, and directly assists student organizations to preserve the history of their organization and experiences at the University of West Georgia.

Materials in this collection were donated by Tim Penn, December 2017; Fred O’Neal, October 2018; and Aaron L. Prater, October 2018 and January 2020, Sam Clounts, October 2018.
