Biographical/Historical note

Dr. James B. “Jim” Klee was born on August 5, 1916 to Charles Hunter Klee and Anna M. Butt. He attended the University of Michigan where he received his B.A., his M.A., and his Ph.D. in psychology.

Klee joined Abraham Maslow at Brandeis University in the 1950s where he helped co-develop the first humanistic psychology program. While teaching at Brandeis, Klee taught as a Fulbright scholar at Allahabad University in India from 1963 to 1964. He left Brandeis in 1971 to join the faculty at West Georgia College where he helped Dr. Mike Arons co-found the humanistic psychology program.

Klee published various articles pertaining to humanistic psychology, existential psychology, learning theory, mysticism, and symbolism, as well as published one book entitled Points of Departure: Aspects of the Tao. He was honored by the Association for Humanistic Psychology in 1994 and made Professor Emeritus upon his retirement from West Georgia College in 1987.

Klee was married to Lucille Klee and had two daughters, Margaret and Kathren. He died on September 28, 1996.

Dr. Don Schwartz was a former graduate student of Jim Klee’s at West Georgia College. While completing his predoctural studies at the California Institute of Asian Studies, Schwartz was authorized by Klee to compile his works into a single volume and attempt to have these works published.
