In 1957 West Georgia College became a four-year institution and Dr. Martin came to Carrollton as the chairman of the Social Science Division, eventually becoming Dean of the Graduate School and later Vice-President and Dean of Academic Affairs, retiring in 1977. He received the first honorary alumnus award given by West Georgia College and later the Distinguished Service Award. The college yearbook was dedicated to him in 1961.
