General Note
Hand-drawn map of Carroll County by John Whatley based on the viatories, or field notes, of government agent Benjamin Hawkins (1754-1816). Hawkins traveled through what is now Carroll County on October 8-9 1798. Whatley researched the Hawkins field notes at the Library of Congress during 1953-1954. Whatley's map was likely part of a package, along with a letter to Irvine S. Ingram dated November 1956 which also included Whatley's typed notes from the Hawkins' viatories. Irvine S. Ingram papers, Box 63, Folder 7, Carroll County 1927-1960
