Scope and Contents
The Alan Yeong-Marcello drawings contain costume and set design drawings by former University of West Georgia (UWG) professor, costume designer, and scenographer, Alan Yeong-Marcello. The drawings were created and used for theatrical productions at UWG and professional productions in the Atlanta, Georgia, metropolitan area from approximately 2001 to 2023 and consist of original color drawings, pencil sketches, and copies.
The collection is divided into three series: (1) Portfolios, (2) Professional production drawings, and (3)
University of West Georgia production drawings.

Biographical / Historical
Alan Yeong-Marcello, also known as Chean Teong Yeong-Marcello, was a theater professor at the University of West Georgia (UWG) in Carrollton, Georgia, as well as a costume designer and scenographer who worked on theater productions in the Atlanta metropolitan area. Yeong-Marcello earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Theatre, with minors in Broadcasting and Print Journalism, from Bemidji State University in Bemidji, Minnesota in 1993. In May of 1997, he earned a Masters in Fine Arts in Scenography from the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kansas. He later earned a second Masters in Fine Arts in Costume Design from the Hilberry Graduate Repertory Theatre of Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan in Spring of 2001.
A member of the United Scenic Artists, Local USA 829, labor union and professional association, Yeong-Marcello worked in various roles in theater and teaching, such as Chinese Language Interpreter, Scenic-Artist-in-Charge, Properties Master, University Theatre Makeup Supervisor, Costume Shop Manager, and Professor. In the Fall of 2001, he began teaching at UWG and acting as the Resident Costume Designer and Costume Shop Supervisor. By 2014, he was a full professor in the Theatre Department teaching costume design and other design theory classes.
While at UWG, Yeong-Marcello utilized his talents in costume and scenic design for numerous university productions. Outside of his university teaching and production work, he engaged in costume and set design for professional productions at many Atlanta, Georgia, metropolitan area theaters. These theaters include Theater Emory, Theatrical Outfit, Atlanta Lyric Theatre, Actors' Express, Horizon Theatre Company, Process Theatre/Whole World Theatre, and Theatre OUTlanta in Atlanta, GA. Other Georgia theaters include Aurora Theatre in Lawrenceville, Serenbe Playhouse in Chattahoochee Hills, Georgia Ensemble Theatre and Kudzu Playhouse in Roswell, Theatre in the Square in Marietta, LaGrange College Theatre Arts Program in La Grange, and Onstage Atlanta and Theatre Decatur in Decatur. His work on professional productions earned him a variety of nominations and awards in costume design.
Beyond the classroom and stage, Yeong-Marcello was active in university committees and services at UWG and filled roles, such as committee member, programming chair, designer, and mentor. He participated in professional committees acting as the Vice President and Chair of the Programming for Georgia Theatre Conference (2017), the Design Competition Adjudicator for the Alabama Thespian Conference (2010), the KCACTF Region 4 Adjudicator (Fall 2001-approximately 2023), and a member of the Gwinnett County Technical Theatre Advisory Council (Fall 2004-Spring 2006). He also participated in presentations and conferences for the United States Institute for Theatre Technology and UWG.
Yeong-Marcello passed away in September 2023.
