Biographical / Historical
Cooperative education at West Georgia College began in 1978 with the School of Business placing eight students with government agencies. The Cooperative Education Program was set up by faculty members who believed that students should have the opportunity to combine classroom theory with practical work experience.
In 1979-1980, a decision was made to expand the School of Business' cooperative education program to the entire College and the office of "Placement and Cooperative Education" was created to manage the program. An employer co-op committee was created to advise and assist. The committee was composed of representatives from Georgia Power, Southwire Company, Sandoz Dyes and Chemicals, Continental Telephone, Georgia Natural Gas, the Internal Revenue Service, and the Social Security Administration.
Through the years, West Georgia College continued to increase its financial support to cooperative education. Beginning with approximately $2000 in 1978-1979, the college, by 1980-1981, had increased its support to $10,000.
