Biographical / Historical

Chester F. Hunt mustered into Battery B, 1st Rhode Island Light Artillery on August 13, 1861. Hunt was killed on October 14, 1863, at Bristoe Station, Virginia.

Alvin D. Hall mustered into Company B, 12th New Hampshire Infantry on August 30, 1862. Hall was wounded on May 3, 1863, at Chancellorsville, Virginia. He died on November 15, 1874, in Barnstead, New Hampshire.

Little is known about Alfred Dickerson. His service records indicate that at some point he served with the U.S. general army as a private. Dates and units are unknown.

A letter dated July 31, 1866, indicates that A. H. Nickerson was a 1st Lieutenant in a unit designated with the number 14. Little is known about Lieutenant Nickerson. However, the letter does mention a gentleman named Scholl Lungre and is addressed to the Paymaster in Savannah, Georgia (Tybee Island).

This collection contains two letters from the American Civil War and one dated immediately after the end of the war. There is also information related to certain units during the war and soldiers' military service records.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Gift of Mark McCormick in January 2022.

McCormick is a history teacher at Carrollton High School (Carrollton, Georgia) and has been teaching almost 25 years. Prior to becoming a teacher, he worked for several corporations and for the State of Georgia. McCormick purchased these letters around 2016/2017 from Shiloh Relics in Savannah, Tennessee, to use in his teaching. He donated the letters to Ingram Library's Special Collections on January 4, 2022. McCormick donated artifacts from the Civil War that he had also used for teaching purposes to the Bowdon Area Historical Society (Bowdon, Georgia) in 2021.
