Biographical / Historical
Publications and Printing, now known as UWG Print Services, first opened in 1965. Called Central Duplicating, it operated out of a second floor office in the Administration Building (later demolished). Faculty and staff produced their own copies on mimeograph machines.
Having only three student assistants runnng the shop, Dr. Tracy Stallings made the decision to hire a manager in 1968 and employed Jimmy Drew as Central Duplicating's first full-time employee (Drew retired in 1998). During this period, the operation expanded and in the late 1960s the office moved onto the ground floor of the Martha Munro building. Several years later, Central Duplicating (together with Public Relations, now known as University Communications and Marketing) moved onto the bottom floor of the Old Auditorium, which was formerly occupied by the Bookstore.
In the 1970s, a previously-used metal building was acquired and set up in the current location of UWG Print Services (east of the Humanities Building and south of Bowdon Hall). The operation shared this building with ITS until the latter moved into Cobb Hall. Sometime during the State University of West Georgia years (1996 to 2005), the name of the office was changed to Publications and Printing (often referred to as "Pub and Print" or "P and P").
In 2010, Publications and Printing was transferred from Alumni Services to the Vice President for Business and Finance with the print operation reporting to Auxiliary Enterprises. At this time, the office was given the opportunity to provide its services both on and off campus. By 2013, Publications and Printing had begun to outgrow its space and a decision was made to expand and renovate the building to its current state (9,300 square feet and faced with a brick and glass-front lobby). Effective July 1, 2020, the name was changed to Print Services. (Written by Sally Roberts, Director of Publications and Printing (1993-2019) with additional information provided by Brooke Keener.)
