Biographical / Historical

The College of Social Sciences (COSS) was founded in April 2011. Dr. N. Jane McCandless was named Dean in September 2011. COSS was comprised of six departments: Anthropology, Criminology, Mass Communications, Psychology, Political Science, and Sociology. The mission of the College of Social Sciences was to provide students with a knowledge of the contemporary and historical aspects of the various disciplines of the social sciences and the skills necessary for professional competence.

In May 2020, Interim Provost of Academic Affairs Dr. David Jenks announced the merger of the College of Arts and Humanities, College of Sciences and Mathematics, and the College of Social Sciences into a single college. This was done as a cost-cutting measure due to budgetary downturns resulting from lower enrollment and the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on state funding.
