Scope and Contents note

This collection contains audio and visual recordings of educational materials, debates, interviews of faculty and staff, and documentaries pertaining to the Fourth District Agricultural and Mechanical School, West Georgia College, and the State University of West Georgia.

Primary video and audio formats include VHS tape, U-Matic, and U-Matic S, but also include Sony EV 1-inch open reel video tape, color-2 track sound, dual track audio, DVD-R, CD, and audio tape.

Of particular note are recordings from the Humanities Context for Controversial Constitutional Issues series, which were moderated by Dr. Donald Wagner and Dr. Mark LaFountain, from 1988. This series covered topics which included abortion, the death penalty, drug testing, and pornography and its relation to free speech.

Biographical/Historical note

The Fourth District Agricultural and Mechanical (A&M) School was established in 1906 by the Georgia General Assembly and operated from 1908-1933. The school was located just outside the city limits of Carrollton, Georgia in Carroll County. Irvine S. Ingram was the second principal of the school, and in 1933, when the campus became West Georgia College, he was named its first president. West Georgia College became a four-year institution in 1957 and was renamed the State University of West Georgia in 1996.
