Biographical / Historical
The University of West Georgia (UWG) was founded in 1906 as the Fourth District Agricultural and Mechanical School. Fraternity and sorority life began in 1967 when the national social sorority Phi Sigma Delta (now known as Delta Delta Delta) established a chapter on campus. "Greek life" first appeared in the West Georgia College student handbook in 1971. Black Greek Council, now known as the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC), was first listed in the West Georgia College student handbook, the Uncatalog in 1979. The stated goal of Greek life at the University of West Georgia is to offer opportunities for students to develop lasting friendships; contribute to service around the community; and participate in social, cultural, and athletic activities. The three councils, Black Greek Council, Interfraternity Council, and Panhellenic Council, govern the fraternities and sororities. Greek village opened in 2009, creating for the first time a community for fraternities and sororities on campus. Some UWG fraternities and sororities continue to maintain their own houses off campus.
