Scope and Content

The collection consists of twelve scrapbooks containing clippings, letters, and political memorabilia from 1980-2002 which document Gingrich's rise in politics to the U.S. Speaker of the House as well his decision to resign completely from Congress and the divorce battle that ensued after he had left his job.

Biographical Note

Audrey Bray worked as a member of Newt Gingrich's staff from 1978 to 1990.

Audrey Bray (1932-2010) was born on April 4, 1932 in Roselle, Illinois. She married Dick Bray and they had three children. Politically active, she began to volunteer for Newt Gingrich during his first U.S. Congressional term in 1978. She also held the position of Coweta County Chairman for Gingrich in 1982.

Bray owned and operated the Newnan Bakery until 1984 when she became Gingrich's office manager in Newnan. Bray continued working for Gingrich until 1990 when reapportionment moved the 6th District out of the area, and after this she worked for Representative Mac Collins from 1993 until 2000.

Bray was a member of the Pilot Club, an active member of the Newnan-Coweta Republican Party, and also helped found the Newnan-Coweta Republican Women's Association eventually serving as President of that association.

She was the first woman in Coweta County to hold office in the Newnan-Coweta Chamber of Commerce. She was also a member of the Newnan-Coweta Arts Association, a board member for the Girl Scout, and a board member with the United Way.

In 2002 Bray was diagnosed with breast cancer and was a key part in founding the Coweta-Newnan Breast Cancer support group that same year. On September 12, 2010 Bray died of cancer at her home in Newnan.
