Biographical/Historical note
The Douglas & Lomason Company was founded on October 9, 1902 by Harry A. Lomason, Alexander G. Douglas, and Albert J. Cloutier with company headquarters in Detroit, Michigan. Douglas served as the company’s first president, with Lomason as company secretary and treasurer, and Cloutier as vice-president.
The company first manufactured carriage and sleigh rails, handles, and name plates. As the automobile became more popular, the company began manufacturing accessories and parts for motor vehicles. During the 1930s Douglas retired and sold out all of his interest in the company yet the Douglas name was retained for the sake of continuity. Cloutier’s continued participation in the company after the 1930s is unknown.
Harry A. Lomason (1869-1950) became president in 1932 and he was the first in a series of Lomason family members who would manage the company, including William Keithledge Lomason also known as “W.K.” or “Bill” (1910-1992), and then Harry A. Lomason II (1934-2017).
During World War I and World War II, the Douglas & Lomason Company ceased all civilian production and produced bombs and military vehicle parts for the US Army and Navy. These manufacturing contributions culminated in the Company receiving an Army-Navy “E” Award in 1944.
W.K. Lomason became president of the Douglas & Lomason Company after the death of his father, Harry, in 1950. In 1955, he opened plants in Carrollton and in Newnan Georgia, which manufactured moldings for use as automotive trim. In the 1960s, Douglas & Lomason expanded once again, opening manufacturing plants in Arkansas, Mississippi, Nebraska, Iowa, and Georgia. Sometime around 1970 Douglas & Lomason Company established Shamrock Airlines as a corporate division and airplanes were purchased in 1970 and 1971. The airliners were used to transport tools and die for casting the metal to various plant locations.
In 1976, the company closed their Detroit plant and a new corporate office was established in Farmington Hills, Michigan. W.K. Lomason retired that year and W.K.’s son, Harry A. Lomason II succeeded his father’s presidency. Over the course of its existence, Douglas & Lomason had manufacturing plants in the following locations: Phenix City, Alabama; Marianna, Arkansas; Carrollton, Georgia; Columbus, Georgia; LaGrange, Georgia; Newnan, Georgia; Normal, Illinois; Dakota City, Iowa; Humboldt, Iowa; Red Oak, Iowa; Havre DeGrace, Maryland; Detroit, Michigan; Farmington Hills, Michigan; Richmond, Michigan; Amory, Mississippi; Cleveland, Mississippi; Kansas City, Missouri; Troy, Missouri; Columbus, Nebraska; Milan, Tennessee; Del Rio, Texas; and Acuna, Mexico.
In the early 1990s, Douglas and Lomason began to look to foreign partnerships in order to serve foreign markets as well as to demonstrate the company's global capabilities to the large American auto firms. In 1995 the company established a joint venture with Shanghai Traffic Machinery Factory in China. Later that year Douglas and Lomason entered into a joint venture with German firm Kieper Recaro, Europe's premier seating supplier. These two joint ventures along with a previously established partnership with Namba Press Works of Japan would provide the company with an important global presence as it entered the last years of the century. In 1996, the Douglas & Lomason Company merged with Magna International.
A notable connection to the West Georgia region is the Neva Lomason Memorial Library in Carrollton, GA, dedicated in 1967. The library is a branch of the West Georgia Regional Library system. Neva Lomason (1907-1965) was the wife of W.K. Lomason. She was a noted musician and teacher. The Neva Lomason Memorial Library is still open today serving the community of Carrollton, Georgia.
