Darden, Buddy, 2006 July 19
Scope and Contents note
Interviewed by Mel Steely on July 19, 2006 at an unknown location.
Darden discusses his loss in the 1994 election to Bob Barr as well as his second attempt to return to Congress in 2002. He discussed the circumstances around Zell Miller's appointment to Paul Coverdell's Congressional seat and Sonny Perdue's unlikely election as governor that year. Darden describes his encounters with President Clinton, sharing stories about jogging with the president.
Darden supported Roy Barnes for governor, he and many others were surprised when Sonny Perdue won the governorship in 2002. In 2002, Darden ran unsuccessfully for Congress in the newly re-drawn 11th congressional District. Phil Gingrey won the election. Darden sees politics moving back to the middle, the parties have been pushing the extremes yet the people are still in the middle.
