Scope and Contents note

From the Collection:

This collection consists of eleven different plays in the form of twelve pamphlets (there are two copies of one play) published in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. The pamphlets measure 4 ¾” by 7 ½”.

Several of the plays were written by two well-known playwrights of the nineteenth century. John Baldwin Buckstone (Sept. 14, 1802 – Oct. 31, 1879) was a popular actor in England who wrote over 150 plays in his lifetime. According to his obituary in the New York Times on November 1, 1879, Married Life was written in 1834. This was sixty years before the publication of the copy in the collection, proving how popular his plays continued to be after his death. He also originated the role of John Box in 1847’s Box and Cox, written by John Maddison Morton. Morton (Jan. 3, 1811 – Dec. 19, 1891) was also a popular English playwright of the era. Although information on the other authors and plays found in the collection could not be found, it is probable that the plays had a high degree of popularity, making them suitable for mass publication.
