Biographical/Historical Note

Dr. Elena Mustakova-Possardt (b.1960-) served as an associate professor of psychology at the State University of West Georgia focusing on psycho-social human development.

She spent the early part of her life in Bulgaria, graduating from Bulgaria's Sofia University with both undergraduate and graduate degrees in English language and literature. Her Master's thesis, entitled "The Fall of Selfhood in Renaissance and Romanticism" dealt with the global forces and socio-cultural factors that influence individual and community identity. She received her Doctor of Education degree in Human Development from the University of Massachusetts in 1996.

In 2000, Dr. Mustakova-Possardt at the State University of West Georgia (SUWG) began working with the Hispanic community in Carroll County. Part of her work intersected with the efforts of the Brookwood Center for Outreach and Learning which was a collaborative project initiated by SUWG's Anthropology Department and the Carroll County Chamber of Commerce that provided assistance to the area's rapidly growing Hispanic population.

Along with a group of graduate psychology students, Mustakova-Possardt offered the Latino community psycho-social assistance via counseling and education. As the Brookwood Center continued to grow in size and scope, so did Dr. Mustakova-Possardt's efforts to enable the Latino population to develop their own singular community voice. While still working with the Brookwood Center—which by 2001 had relocated and changed its name to the Multicultural Community Alliance (MCCA)—Mustakova-Possardt began work to establish a grassroots, nonprofit organization known as Latinos United of Carroll County (LUCC). The LUCC, while offering many of the same services as the MCCA, actively sought to assist natural leaders to emerge from within the Latino community itself. Through this, the LUCC's aim was to develop a unified Latino community with a sense of belonging and a strong civic voice capable of addressing its own needs. In 2002, Dr. Mustakova-Possardt stepped down as Founding President of the LUCC and Dr. Evangelio González, a local physician from Cuba, took over as President and Director of the Health Clinic.

Dr. Mustakova-Possardt's work within the Latino community in Carroll County received numerous grants and awards including the Carter Partnership Award for Campus-Community Collaboration.

Dr. Mustakova-Possardt participated in an effort to create an Academic Service Learning (ASL) program at SUWG. The program's pedagogical strategy sought to bridge the gap between academic theory and praxis and allowed students to apply skills learned in the classroom to address the needs of the community. The ASL program officially launched in 2004. However, it struggled to garner the administrative support needed to become a fully realized program. The ASL program ultimately dissolved in 2006 following Dr. Mustakova-Possardt's resignation as Assistant Professor at SUWG.

After leaving SUWG in 2006, Dr. Mustakova-Possardt has continued her work in individual and community development as a spiritually-oriented psychotherapist and counselor. She currently lives and works in Arlington, Virginia.

Scope and Content Note

The collection consists largely of materials pertaining to Dr. Mustakova-Possardt's involvement with the Latinos United of Carroll County (LUCC). These materials include LUCC brochures, newspaper clippings and board member correspondences in the form of emails. Materials also include LUCC meeting minutes from September 2001 to April 2002. Of particular interest are meeting minutes for the month of September 2001 as they provide a glimpse of immigrant life in the days following the terrorist attacks in New York.

Finally, the collection comprises Dr. Mustakova-Possardt's endeavors to facilitate service-based learning at SUWG. These materials consist of graduate level psychology course syllabi built around the service work done at the Brookwood Center.
