Biographical/Historical Note

Courts of Ordinary typically have jurisdiction with regard to roads, bridges, ferries, public buildings, paupers, county officers, and county funds and taxes. The Carroll Court of Ordinary kept records of roads, bridges, accounts, schedules of property, paupers, and related petitions.

Scope and Content Note

This collection contains two separate accessions. The first accession contains records from Carroll County's Court of Ordinary on a variety of cases. The court records include oaths of office, homestead petitions, Confederate pensions, pauper petitions, and tax receipts. The largest group, though, are road and bridge records. Nine large folders, taking up an entire box, contain Highway Department of Georgia proposals and applications for new roads and bridges.

The second accession was received in November 2013. It contains 40 bound volumes, dating from 1868 to 1932, on accounts, homestead petitions, minutes, pauper indexes, pauper petitions, road defaulter dockets, road petitions, roads and bridges, schedules of property, and Wild Land Digests.

Administrative Information

Custodial History note

In 1987, West Georgia College Special Collections Librarian, Myron House, and Neva Lomason Special Collections Librarian, Rudene Hollingsworth, obtained the Carroll County Court records from their storage in a granite vault in the basement of the old Carroll County Courthouse. They were loose papers originally destined for destruction. The records were then divided between the two institutions because of storage space concerns. In 2013, the Carroll County Court records (Ordinary, Superior, and Misc. along with City Court of Carrollton) were transferred to UWG Special Collections from the Neva Lomason Library except for tax records which were retained by the Neva Lomason Library.

Processed by Sarah Warren in April 2009 and Julie Bogle in January 2014.
